Overview
Otley Courthouse is a small-scale, not-for-profit, mixed art form performing arts centre hosting a busy programme of professional touring artists across a wide range of genres including folk, rock, world music, classical, standup comedy, theatre, poetry and more.
The Courthouse has an in house PA and lighting rig, and works with a pool of versatile and experienced freelance technicians who are employed on a show by show basis.
While the majority of the work is audio led with simple static lighting washes, technicians largely work solo and are therefore responsible both for mixing audio and operating lighting.
COMPETENCIES:
Live Sound Engineering
- Operation of digital mixing desk (Allen & Heath QU-24)
- Close micing of acoustic instruments, drum kit, DI instruments and vocals
- Experience in FOH mixing for different genres, including folk / world / rock bands. Note that due to the venue type and limitations, micing of drums is usually limited to kick / snare / overhead
- Monitor mixing – up to six separate mixes from FOH mixing desk
Lighting
In addition to sound engineering, the technician will also be expected to provide suitable wash lighting using the in house digital lighting desk (Zero88 FLX S24).
For music shows the technician is not expected to supply complex lighting changes at the same time as live mixing. The venue does however host a small number of theatre productions with more complex plots which require a greater degree of LX knowledge and experience.
Set Up / Tear Down
The technician is responsible for setting up and striking the stage, including cabling, mics, stands, etc. They may also be required to set up / tear down the stage itself, which can be a maximum of 9 interconnecting stage sections, with removable legs.
Soft Skills
Liaising with Courthouse Centre Director and artists before event. The technician will normally be the first point of contact for artists when they arrive, and must have good communication skills, suitable for ‘meet and greet’ as well as working with the artists during set up, soundcheck and performance. They will spend most of their time working solo, so must be able to work under their own initiative.
Safe Working
The technician is responsible for maintaining a safe working environment for artists, audience, staff and volunteers including, but not limited to, appropriate management of cabling, electrical safety, maintaining clear egress routes, and safe lifting and carrying.
Exclusions
The technician is not expected to perform general maintenance or, for music led shows, make adjustments to the lighting rig.
Pay: £100 – £150 per session, depending on length and complexity of event.
