Geoff Selley: Shackleton – The Greatest Survival Story Ever Told
Advance Price: £9 Courthouse Friends : £8
The lecture will be given by Geoff Selley (FRGS), the current custodian of a talk handed down in direct succession from Dr. Hussey, one of the original expedition members. It tells the full story of the ill-fated expedition, the crew’s survival after losing their ship, and Shackleton’s epic boat voyage through stormy seas to South Georgia to bring help.
The talk is accompanied by slides reproduced from Frank Hurley’s original magic-lantern images of the expedition. Passed down through generations, the lecture has remained true to Dr. Hussey’s notes, presented as if by him. With the eerie glow of the Antarctica landscape, the audience is transported back to the heroic age of exploration.
“For scientific discovery, give me Scott… but in a hopeless situation… pray for Shackleton.” – Sir Raymond Priestly
